First Reformed New at the Browning
New at the Browning
Directed by Paul Schrader
With Ethan Hawke, Amanda Seyfried, Cedric the Entertainer
Rated R, 113 minutes, DCP

Paul Schrader’s newest film tracks the hallmarks of his career, namely quiet character studies about men facing existential dread, uncomfortable in society, and weathered from the friction between their ideals and reality. From Schrader’s work, First Reformed mirrors Taxi Driver the most, with Travis Bickle being replaced by a minister (born-to-brood Ethan Hawke) of a small congregation in upstate New York who grapples with mounting despair brought on by a tormented past that, when tragedy strikes, colors in dark tones his hopes for the future.

Co-presented by the Department of English, Sustainability Studies, and Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts.
