Direct from South Africa, the 25-member Soweto Gospel Choir performs an inspirational vocal program of tribal, traditional, and popular African gospel music in eight different languages. Earthy rhythms, rich harmonies, and charismatic a capella performances combine to uplift the soul and express South Africa's hopes for the future.
The Soweto Gospel Choir draws on the best talent from the many churches and communities in and around Soweto. While local styles have inevitably blended with the Western influences imported by missionary schools and the media, the Soweto Gospel Choir has maintained a distinctively South African sound. Since the Choir began touring internationally in early 2003, they’ve performed to nightly standing ovations, sold-out houses, and rave reviews.
As well as traditional African gospel, their repertoire includes "Amazing Grace," "Paradise Road," and music by Otis Redding and the soul-styled reggae of Jimmy Cliff. The concert also features traditional dancers, drummers, and a dynamic four-piece band.
