Starring Ed Asner as William Jennings Bryan and John Heard as Clarence Darrow; join L.A. Theatre Works, America's premiere radio theatre company, for an evening of drama. Based entirely on original transcripts of the famous 1925 Tennessee v. John Scopes "Monkey Trial," which challenged the newly passed Tennessee legislature's "Butler Act" banning the teaching of evolution in the state's public schools.
The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial resonates today for many reasons. It is a fascinating piece of real drama set in 1925 when America was dramatically changing. A world war had ended, social traditions were under strain, jazz played in the background, and a great wave of revivalism swept the country.
Fast forward to today and the same questions are before us. What is it that makes this particular branch of science so controversial? Why are we, 80 years after that famous trial, still echoing the arguments of its great orators, Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan?
Using the format of live in-performance radio theatre, recreated by a renowned cast of actors, transports audiences back to Dayton, Tennessee's sweltering, tension-filled courtroom during the summer of 1925 where the audience will experience firsthand the dramatic trial as it took place.
Cast subject to change.
