Fans of Loving Vincent may very much appreciate this biopic of the tortured artist Vincent van Gogh living in Arles, France during his career’s gloaming. Played by Willem Dafoe, who received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal, van Gogh struggles with theological questions and mental illness, which make for a tumultuous relationship with his friend Paul Gaugin (Oscar Isaac). An alum of the gallery set himself, director Julian Schnabel takes different tack to the biopic by avoiding the painter’s greatest hits through the years and, instead, focuses on van Gogh’s artistic process and what internally drove him to create timeless works that still define the medium over a century later.
