Reassemblage (1982)
Directed by Trinh T. Minh-ha
Not Rated, 40 minutes, DVD

Women are the focus but not the object of Trinh T. Minh-ha's influential first film, which launched an award-winning career as a filmmaker, academic, and intellectual. Through a complicity of interaction between film and spectator, this complex visual study of the women of rural Senegal reflects on documentary filmmaking and the ethnographic representation of cultures.

The Ties That Bind (1984)
Directed by Su Friedrich
Not Rated, 55 minutes, DVD

The Ties That Bind is a powerful meditation on political responsibility and personal loss as seen through the story of the filmmaker's mother, who grew up in Nazi Germany. Using rare archival footage, extensive interviews and critical commentary, Friedrich constructs a fearless dialogue between past and present, between mother and daughter. The Ties That Bind engages in a profound search for an understanding of history, and challenges us in our responsibility for the present.

Free for ND, SMC, HC, and IUSB students.

Sponsored by the Meg and John P. Brogan Endowment for Documentary Film.
