Professor Pfinklepfunder's $1 Sunday Films
Directed by Hayao Miyazaki
With Christian Bale, Lauren Bacall, Blythe Danner
Rated PG, 119 minutes, DCP
In English
Fans of Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki often place Howl's Moving Castle on his B-sides, noting the lavish visuals were given much more effort than the somewhat rickety plot loosely adapted from the book by Diana Wynne Jones. Those lavish visuals, though, make it one of his best films to see on a cinema screen. As to that plot: Sophie has an uneventful life at her late father's hat shop, but all that changes when she befriends the wizard Howl (voiced by Christian Bale in the English-language dub), who lives in a magical flying castle. However, the evil Witch of Waste (Lauren Bacall) takes issue with their budding relationship and casts a spell on young Sophie, which ages her prematurely. Now, Howl must use all his magical talents to battle the jealous witch and return Sophie to her former youth and beauty.
