Sacred Music at Notre Dame

In collaboration with the South Bend Symphony Orchestra and four units at the University of Notre Dame, Symphonic Wings: A Story of Peril and Promise is a cinematic, symphonic work that weaves science into a story told in music and film that transforms a concerning scientific issue into a powerful emotional journey on the concert stage. Commissioned through a Strategic Framework Grant, this innovative art work is being developed by an interdisciplinary team that includes a biologist, a symphony conductor, a composer, and a filmmaker. Sharing the program with Symphonic Wings is Ludvig van Beethoven's nature-inspired Pastoral Symphony.

The cinematic symphonic tone poem portrays six insects, selected for their sacred meaning across human cultures, are depicted over the course of one day, potentially one day in YOUR garden. The story arrives at the inescapable conclusion that their well-being and ours are mutually linked.

Symphonic Wings: A Story of Peril and Promise is supported by a Strategic Framework Grant from the Office of the Provost.

A partner performance of the 2027 Notre Dame Arts Biennial and supported with funding from the Notre Dame Arts Initiative.
