Browning Cinema
Sunday Docs
Directed by Joel Anderson
With Talia Zucker, Rosie Traynor, David Pledger
Rated R, 87 minutes, 4K UHD
A critically acclaimed film from Australia that went largely overlooked during its release, Lake Mungo has been cited by many as the best or most interesting film in the sub-genre of found footage scary movies (think: Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity, Cannibal Holocaust, Late Night with the Devil) that fold the form and trappings of documentary films into something entirely eldritch yet Dateline. Lake Mungo goes a different direction than those films, utilizing a more straightforward documentary approach to amp up the psychological horror angle for a slow, hot burn. After the funeral for a teenage Alice Palmer (Talia Zucker) who drowned in Lake Mungo, her family experiences a series of unsettling events that put into question whether Alice or not is still with them.
Sponsored by the Meg and John P. Brogan Endowment for Documentary Film.
