Premiering at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, Teenage Sex and Death a Camp Miasma took home the Queer Palm award. That mix of lofty artscene prestige seems at odds with the genre roots the film is so carefully quoting, loving, and sublimating-as if turning the offal it cuts out of its characters into a Michelin-star dish. Director Jane Schoenburn continues their elevated/surreal horror work seen in We're All Going to the World's Fair and I Saw the TV Glow with megastars Hannah Einbinder (Hacks) and Gillian Anderson (X-Files), with the former playing a young filmmaker trying to reboot a faded slasher franchise with the original final girl from it who is now reclusive (Anderson). Along the way, the movie-within-a-movie is about so many other movies that the bodies pile up next to the piles of bodies past.
Another recent arthouse film with its own take on the summer camp slasher with a similar coziness to those past killed campers is the Canadian slasher In a Violent Nature. Its plot has all the telltale origin elements: The enigmatic resurrection, rampage, and retribution of an undead killer unfolds in a remote wilderness after a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower that entombed its rotting corpse. Its spin on the subgenre, though-and it's a great spin-is to frame the film through the eyes of the mute killer, an amalgamation of the lumbering killers from Friday the 13th, The Burning, Halloween, and others, which creates an ambient experience both like and unlike its predecessors.
