One of the most audacious art heists of all time, initially believed to be perpetrated by spies or a vast crime syndicate, happened at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City on Christmas Eve in 1985. The actual culprits were two slackers (Gael García Bernal and Leonardo Ortizgris), who trudged through the suburbs of Mexico City playing video games, reenacting William Tell, and floundering in veterinary school.

Searching for something greater (think of American Animals), they concocted a caper to return the art to the indigenous tribes from which it was stolen. The socio-political message charges the typical drama of the heist film in this biopic that reminds you often it is only a “replica of the original.”
