Finding refuge in books is a common launching pad for children's movies (e.g., The NeverEnding Story or The Princess Bride), and films using the device are often adaptations of books within books. Here, The Pagemaster is written directly for the screen and leans into the book within a movie structure, embracing animation/live-action hybridity á la Who Framed Roger Rabbit. After seeking shelter from a storm in a mysterious library, an easily terrified kid (Macaulay Culkin, very much not the plucky Kevin from Home Alone) is transported to an animated fantasy world. There, he encounters characters and situations from classic literature who come from the enchanted world of the public domain.
