What does performing Motown music mean to you, and how do you approach paying tribute to such an iconic era in music history?
Performing Motown hits is truly an honor. Growing up listening to these iconic artists laid the foundation for my own artistry. It’s not just about singing these records, it’s about conveying the passion and love they’ve given me, and sharing that with the audience. I hope when people hear these songs, they feel transported back to the first time they heard them, or I become a new memory for those who might be hearing it for the first time.
Motown has a rich legacy that has influenced countless artists. How do you capture the spirit and energy of the original recordings while bringing your own style to the performance?
Impersonations have always been my thing, so I start by studying the original versions of each song, paying attention to every nuance—the breath placement, vocal modulations, and all the little details. Once I’ve memorized the song as closely as I can, I start adding my own flavor, using these songs as vocal exercises. That way, I capture the vibe and energy of the original but still make it my own with my personal style.
What is it like to perform with a live band that so authentically recreates the Motown sound? How does the band’s energy influence your performance?
There’s nothing like performing with a band that just clicks. When everyone knows their parts and gets in sync, the energy in the room is electric. We feed off each other, and it elevates the song beyond anything we imagined. Seeing the band’s talent in real-time just fuels my passion for the music, and we all get lost in the moment together.
How do you prepare for a concert like this, especially when you’re performing such beloved and well-known hits?
Honestly, it’s about getting out of my head and not overthinking things. I practice every chance I get, but I’m also my own biggest critic, so I have to remind myself to have fun and trust that I’m in this position for a reason. God’s got me, and that’s a reminder to not take it too seriously and just enjoy the moment.
Motown music was not only influential musically but also culturally. How do you think the messages in these songs continue to resonate with audiences today?
Many of the classic Motown songs addressed real-life issues that are still relevant today. Tracks like “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye and “War” by Edwin Starr aren’t just songs—they were messages about love, peace, and unity. They had a purpose beyond just making money, and you can feel that authenticity.
How do you engage the audience during your performances, especially with songs that they know and love so well?
Feeding off the band’s energy is key, but I also love bringing the audience into the performance. I see music as my love language, so when I can get people singing along, especially my friends and family, that’s the cherry on top. It makes the connection feel that much more meaningful.
Looking ahead, are there any other musical eras or styles you’re interested in exploring through tribute performances, and what makes them appealing to you?
I’d love to explore the later years of Motown, especially before the Universal Motown merger in 2005. That era introduced artists like Erykah Badu, Brian McKnight, and India Arie, who brought a fresh perspective to the Motown sound. It would be great to take the audience on a journey through those transitions while still honoring the original legacy of Motown.
Anything else you’d like to share?
I’m incredibly thankful for this opportunity to honor Motown’s legacy, and I’m excited to keep sharing that energy with new audiences. These songs hold so much meaning, not just for us as artists, but for the fans who’ve loved them for decades. I look forward to continuing to celebrate that with everyone who joins us in this journey. Follow me everywhere @ChoclettP.

What does performing Motown music mean to you, and how do you approach paying tribute to such an iconic era in music history?
It allows me to step through time and space and see how the world was viewed by those who laid the foundation for me as a performer. I hope that when singing this music, I can showcase the creative nature of my ancestors but also allow myself space to show the gift the Lord has given me and allow myself to grow.
Can you share your favorite Motown song to perform and why it resonates with you personally?
“Treat Her Like a Lady” by The Temptations is one of my favorite songs of all time. The melody, the lyrics, and the groove are electric!! It was a song I learned while performing in the IU Soul Revue. So many memories and so much movement made that a core memory.
How do you prepare for a concert like this, especially when you’re performing such beloved and well-known hits?
It is one of those things that you put your head down and listen. I tend to play the songs on repeat and allow the music to sit in my heart, mind, and soul. It is my hope to learn the nuances of each song and bring the most authentic experience to my performance.
How do you engage the audience during your performances, especially with songs that they know and love so well?
As a performer, it is always my hope to get the crowd engaged right away. Allowing space for them to sing along, and join in the party. If they know the song, there are times I ask them to sing along. I ask them to stand up or clap with me. I never want to leave the stage guessing if I was able to connect with at least one person on that stage.
What is it like to perform with a live band that so authentically recreates the Motown sound? How does the band’s energy influence your performance?
There is nothing like a live band!! I repeat, a solid live band, you know, like that friend who will show up even when you didn’t ask. That’s what I love about live bands, and a band can honestly make or break a show. It is my hope that you will feel the energy as soon as the band starts to play. I know that this show will be one of those moments when you look back and just sit and say, “This was worth every moment.”
