Tell me, how would you react when you get an unexpected email inviting you to perform with an international rock star?
Because when it happened to me this summer, I reacted in a way that most (especially those who were in my immediate vicinity at the time, i.e: my family) would describe as “a bit of a meltdown”. I was quite literally bouncing around my home, shrieking at a decibel that you DON’T want to hear coming out of a trained singer.
As an FTT major, who also takes extra concentrations of classes in Music, Global Affairs, and Sociology, performing with Todd Rundgren—a true Renaissance man of the music industry—was about as ideal a gig as I could ever get. He can do it all, he’s a master storyteller with world-famous work ethic. He represents the exact type of performer I hope to become as I continue to study my craft, in college and beyond.
But in case you, my dear readers, need any further convincing as to why Todd Rundgren’s Play Like a Champion Concert is one performance you definitely don’t want to miss, here are five reasons why I believe you should see his September 7th concert featuring Notre Dame students:
- Not only does this incredibly talented man play multiple instruments, sing, and produce records for some of the biggest names in rock, he also taught himself how to edit music and videos. Many of his biggest hits were truly a “one man show” on every level.
- He is close friends with fellow rock artist Patti Smith, who has described him as: “A pocketful of constellations.”
- His single Time Heals, was the 8th-ever music video to be shown on MTV, and it was a video that he and his video studio directed and produced.
- He composed the score for the hilarious and successful Jim Carey comedy Dumb and Dumber.
- The first song he ever wrote in his life, Hello It’s Me, is still credited as being both his most well-known and most commercially successful song ever. Talk about natural talent!
From delighting and inspiring almost 4 decades of music lovers, to being a trailblazer in music technology development, to his eagerness to meet and perform alongside regular college students, Todd Rundgren is a rockstar in every sense of the word.
