Rated R, 104 minutes, DCP

The recent bonanza of police procedurals, either in scripted form or through one of the many true crime offerings available, often attempt to take and convey the temperature of the street. The eerie feeling of something's about to break is difficult to capture, but first-time director Ladj Ly quickly and convincingly captures the haute tension in the Parisian district of Montfermeil.

While not an adaptation of Victor Hugo's novel, the setting matches key events in the novel and also trains its eye on the mistreatment of the poor and marginalized, here largely those within the African diaspora who face the brunt of the violence once it erupts.
