The timeline Cabaret evinces how much the story resonates with audiences: first a novel (Goodbye to Berlin) in 1939, then a play (I Am a Camera) in 1951, then a musical in 1966 when the "Cabaret" name first gets attached, then a movie musical in 1972, and then as a common Broadway revival, most famously in 1998 (and the 2024 revival is still going strong). The Bob Fosse film adaptation of the musical won eight Oscars, including for Best Editing which is relevant this week. Set at the Kit Kat Klub in 1931 Berlin, Cabaret follows the lead of its own host venue and has a little something of everything: a love triangle, a falling Weimar republic, promiscuity, lavish songs, comedic numbers, and heartbreak.
