Not Rated, 91 minutes, DCP

After a run of celebrated period films (Barbara, Phoenix, and Transit) that increasingly worked outside of the bounds of their periods, Christian Petzold returns with a present-day film adaptation of the water nymph mythology.

Far from Disney's The Little Mermaid, this take on undines runs closer to the exuberances of love that could allow a water nymph to live on land and the tragic turns that occur when that love gives way. Working with a familiar set of actors, Petzold's tight drama tracks the female perspective in the freedom relationships both offer and deny by focusing on the titular city historian Undine (Paula Beer, in a role that garnered her the Silver Bear at Berlin for Best Actress).
