Jim Henson, who co-directed The Dark Crystal with Frank Oz, is primarily known for creating the Muppets and their many films and tv appearances (e.g., later this year in the Browning Cinema's screening of The Muppet Christmas Carol). With The Dark Crystal, Henson and Oz push their skills in puppetry and voicework to a much more fantastical world shaded by Lewis Carroll and Henson's flirting with adapting The Lord of the Rings. The plot here begins, as much fantasy does, with the realization bloodlines are not as they seem. After learning they are not of the noble race of Mystics who raised them but rather the last survivor of the Gelfings, Jen (Stephen Garlick) begins a quest to locate the lost piece of a crystal that brought peace to the universe with intentions to repair it and return balance to a world currently under malevolent control.
