Classics in the Browning
Directed by Lars von Trier
With Björk, Catherine Deneuve, David Morse
Rated R, 140 minutes, Blu-ray
Selma (Björk) is a Czech-immigrant living in rural Washington state. Due to a genetic disease, she is slowly but persistently losing her eyesight. The stress of her work, her disease, and supporting her son as a single mother weigh heavily on Selma, and she finds respite in big classic Hollywood musicals (think, e.g., Björk's music video for It's Oh So Quiet). The film itself begins to transition into a musical itself, blurring the lines between Selma's tragic reality and the world she wishes she could inhabit.
