Professor Pfinklepfunder's $1 Sunday Family Films
Directed by Nick Castle
With Lance Guest, Dan O'Herlihy, Catherine Mary Stewart
Rated PG, 101 minutes, Blu-ray
May the Fourth be somewhat with you. Celebrating Star Wars with a bankshot, the year of Pfinklepfunder titles closes with The Last Starfighter, which is a knock-off of Star Wars with arcade games thrown into the mix — and ultimately has much in common with Gran Turismo (2023). Regardless of its clone status, The Last Starfighter has a mighty-and-growing fanbase that gives the title serious cult status. Here, a teenager (Lance Guest) hits the top score on the arcade game Starfighter. The game's designer (Robert Preston) had secret machinations, though: Starfighter was a means for defense fighter groups to identify potential pilots for a war in space.
