Unique in being the only film in this series to be directly based on a previous film, The Departed moves Infernal Affairs from Hong Kong to Boston. It's further unique in being the only film to take that derivative pathway and win the Best Picture Oscar. Just like Infernal Affairs, the simplicity and elegance of the set-up remains: An undercover cop infiltrates a Boston mob crew while that mob crew has its own mole in the state police department.
