Special Event
Please join us for the third annual Maritain Lecture, to be delivered by Bishop Robert Barron, bishop of the Diocese of Winona-Rochester (Minnesota) and the founder of Word on Fire Catholic Ministries. Bishop Barron will lecture on the topic of "An Old Testament Theology of God."
This lecture will be open to the public and ticketed, with tickets available on a first-come first serve basis beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 5. Bags larger than 8.5x11 inches and outside food and beverage will not be allowed into the venue.
Abstract: Taking my cue from the great bishop theologians of the ancient Church—Chrysostom, Gregory of Nyssa, Ambrose, and Augustine—I will interpret the Old Testament's understanding of God in a theological and spiritual manner. Major themes include the incomparability of God, God's non-competitive transcendence to the world, the necessarily tensive nature of divine naming, God's co-operative way of relating to human agency, and God in relation to suffering. Throughout, I employ a typological and Christological hermeneutic in my reading of the Old Testament.
This is a free but ticketed event. Tickets will only be distributed one hour prior to the performance.
