A major hit at the first Cannes Film Festival in 1946, María Candelaría remains one of the most beloved Mexican Golden Era films and a true hallmark of the style and storylines from that era. Set in Xochimilco in 1909, the title character, Maria (Dolores Del Río), is ostracized by her community due to her mother's sex work. Her only source of love and support is her fiancé, Lorenzo Rafael (Pedro Armendáriz), a kind and devoted peasant who dreams of marrying her despite the prejudice they face. Their love faces incredibly steep hurdles, allowing the melodramatic action to really soar.
