This summer, Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church celebrates a century of faith, music, and community with its 100th Anniversary Reunion Concert. Minister of Music Jovan Lewis, who has been part of Macedonia’s journey for nearly three decades, reflects on the legacy of the church’s music ministry, the spirit of gospel, and the songs that continue to inspire generations.
What does it mean to you to be part of Macedonia’s 100th Anniversary Reunion Concert?
Out of 100 years, which is 10 decades, I have been there nearly three of those. It means a lot to be a part, but it means even more to be involved in the planning and leadership for the success of the reunion concert.
How has Macedonia’s music ministry shaped your life or faith journey?
It was through a song in 2014 at our annual concert. One particular song convicted me and led me to give my life to Christ and I have been living for him ever since.
How does the church’s musical tradition continue to evolve while staying true to its roots?
The sound of music has evolved over the years, but the words still remain the same. In other words, we have a different beat with the same message.
What has the rehearsal and reunion process been like for this milestone event?
Preparation for any concert takes a lot of work and can be stressful, and it has been all of the above, but I believe you have to go through something to get great results. We are looking to have a good time August 30.
How has Pastor Ray E. Owens and First Lady Banitha Owens’ leadership influenced the church’s music ministry?
Having a pastor and first lady who are gospel music lovers is always a plus for a minister of music because it helps us to stay in tune when the pastor and his wife understands song. She is a musician herself, so we always talk about music and what’s good for our house (church). It makes it that much easier to prepare music for worship.
Are there particular songs being performed that carry special historical or emotional meaning?
Yes. “Fight On” because we didn’t give up through the period of about three years without having a pastor. We were able to keep the faith and fight on. Now we have been blessed with the GREATEST pastor, Pastor Ray Owens. “Great Things” looking back over 100 years, we started with church in a house, and now we are in a beautiful facility which is an indication that God has done great things for Macedonia over the years.

As Macedonia marks this historic milestone, its music ministry stands as a testament to the church’s resilience, joy, and devotion. For Minister Lewis, the reunion concert is not only a celebration of the past 100 years but also a reminder that the message carried through song continues to shape lives and strengthen the community today.
