The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) Summer Film School
Summer Film School Series
Directed by Wes Anderson
With Ralph Fiennes, F. Murray Abraham, Mathieu Amalric
Rated R, 100 minutes, Blu-Ray
In English and French and German with English subtitles.

Summer Film School begins with a study of mise-en-scène, which makes good sense to watch The Grand Budapest Hotel given its Oscars for Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling. Wes Anderson continues his style-on-style twee aesthetic and drops it in a historical period for the first time in his career. Specifically, the base of his worldbuilding is in 1930s at a European ski resort (the titular Grand Budapest Hotel) fastidiously led by Gustave (Ralph Fiennes) who is, in turn, backed by junior lobby boy and protege Zero (Tony Revolori).

Gustave runs an incredibly tight ship and attends personally to the many needs of the hotel's guests. When one guest dies under mysterious circumstances, Gustave finds himself at both the beneficiary of her estate and the main suspect in her murder.

Those enrolled in Summer Film School should arrive at 6 p.m. for a lecture. The screening begins at 7 p.m. and is followed by a discussion.

Sponsored by the Meg and John P. Brogan Endowment for Classic Cinema.
