Summer Film School
Directed by Elio Petri
With Marcello Mastroianni, Ursula Andress, Elsa Martinelli
Not Rated, 92 minutes, Blu-ray
In English and Italian with English subtitles

Loosely adapted from an American short story that itself was inspired by The Most Dangerous Game, this classic of Italian cinema has in turn served as a foundation for The Long Walk by Stephen King and The Hunger Games. Visually, its 1960s mod vibes influenced the production design of the Austin Powers franchise. In the wake of World War III, peace is held, in part, by a televised murder show called "The Big Hunt," which allows the winner to retire lavishly. A contestant wins by being the last of the ten who enter to hunt to survive. Caroline (Ursula Andress) is on the cusp of the win with only Marcello (Marcello Mastroianni) standing in her way of the trophy and spoils. When romance starts to bubble between them, "The Big Hunt" takes an unexpected turn.

Those enrolled in Summer Film School should arrive at 6:30 p.m. for a lecture, screening at 7 p.m., and discussion after the film.

Sponsored by the Meg and John P. Brogan Endowment for Classic Cinema.
