Notre Dame Writers Pick Some Movies for Us to Watch
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock
With James Stewart, Grace Kelly, Thelma Ritter
Rated PG, 112 minutes, Blu-ray
MFA Creative Writing Introduction Scheduled!

Although Alfred Hitchcock films often are self-reflexive commentaries on film as a medium, Rear Window fully embraces the meta-commentary and steeps itself in the scopophilia and vicariousness of film. Laid up with a broken leg, professional photographer L.B. "Jeff" Jefferies (James Stewart) combats the cabin fever swelling about his midcentury New York apartment with some binoculars and voyeurism. Looking out his rear window to a shared courtyard, he becomes enthralled with the lives he follows, bringing in his girlfriend Lisa (Grace Kelly) into the peeping. When they suspect a potential murder and the couple decides to crack the case, the once-giant gulf between the apartment and the courtyard quickly collapses as tension builds.

Free for ND, SMC, HC, and IUSB Students.

Sponsored by the Meg and John P. Brogan Endowment for Classic Cinema and The Creative Writing Program at the University of Notre Dame.
