Learning Beyond the Classics: Film Noir: Influences and Inspirations
Directed by Billy Wilder
With Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck, Edward G. Robinson
Not Rated, 110 minutes, DCP
Adapted from the novel by James Cain, himself a parent of hardboiled American literature, Double Indemnity remains a shining example of mid-century film noir and a bright fixture in Billy Wilder's impressive constellation of films. Straight down the line — that's where insurance salesman Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray) is headed when he meets the irresistible Phyllis Dietrichson (Barbara Stanwyck). The two concoct a scheme to collect on her husband's accidental death policy, but their machinations prove to be difficult to keep in the shadows.
